The story:

Rockstar hair
By Kevin Pang
Tribune reporter
December 11, 2008

I've forever been a Supercuts kind of guy, a 15-minute "No. 3, please" clipper job, the type of no-fuss barbershop that knocks a few dollars off if you show up after 9 a.m. and before noon.

There was also a time when I wore T-shirts with commemorative dates (Wrestlemania--April 2, 2000). White gym socks with black dress shoes. Allow that patch of real estate between my eyebrows to idly propagate.

But then, women entered my life. No longer could I mask laziness as cool indifference, or unintentional bedhead as intentional bedhead. And with that, the last vestige of my "schlub life" was forced into the light. So long, Supercuts.

In search of a new look and wanting an alternative to the "walk-in, no wait" lifestyle, I was intrigued by Clandestine Industries. Steps from Wrigley Field, this Lakeview salon would just be another hipster space with neatly arranged hair products, if not for its celebrity attachment.

One of its owners is Pete Wentz, he of the Wilmette pop-rock band Fall Out Boy, the most famous bass player a 15-year-old has ever heard of. Fittingly, the salon offers, among other hair services, an eyeliner treatment for guys called Rockstar Eyes--Wentz himself is a practitioner of this (more on this later).

Clandestine Industries, a hybrid clothing store/hair salon, models itself after the Wentz aesthetic, which I could only describe as a depressed bat.

Upon closer inspection, the Wentz motif is dark and kitschy, sinister and cute, industrial and slinky, the '80s decade and this current one.

The salon windows are opaque, save for a heart-shaped opening in the middle of a bat design. Look inside and you'll see a chandelier hanging above a tabletop arcade game. Cans of strawberry, orange and grape-flavored Crush are for sale. If some rich sugar-buzzed kid who loved The Cure got to design his bedroom, this is what it would look like.

It just so happens the hair stylist, a mohawked bro named Brandon Roc (awesome name), fits right into the Wentz sensibility.

In a former life, Roc, now 29, was a foreman for the grounds department in Franklin Park--fixing water main breaks, scrapping dead squirrels, etc. Creative impulses brimmed over at age 23, and Roc enrolled at Pivot Point International, the esteemed styling academy. And since April, his boss has been Wentz.

Since it is natural law that women are attracted to rock stars, I asked Roc: "Turn me into a Fall Out Boy." I gave no further instructions.

Roc used terms that Esmerelda from my drive-by barbershop never used: dimensions, layering, movement. (Come to think of it, Esmerelda wasn't much of a talker.)

"For your hair," Roc said, "it's all about supplying the right texture with different types of shears."

Here he became a jazz improviser. I'd say Roc was more Miles Davis than Charlie Parker--he'd step back to survey the scene, then interject with a snip here, snip there. It was all very meticulous and detailed, and the whole styling took 45 minutes and cost ($35). (Ben Mollin, who came in second place on Bravo's "Shear Genius," is also a stylist here. His services are a bit pricier.)

And the result? It's hard to describe hair in words. I certainly wasn't used to my hair standing on end, like I stuck a fork in an outlet (in the best possible way). The sides were angled forward, and the hair line in the back was slanted, making it, in his words, less "corporate." But patted down and combed, I was ready for the working world again.

Roc told me his mantra is versatility, and that every stylist in the world should strive for this as well.

"You take into consideration the client's occupation. In the business world, they can still be clean cut and white collar, then on the weekend, with a bit of product, they can be edgy and trendy."

I added a hoodie from the store, a T-shirt and with my new haircut, took a self-portrait. I wore this to work the next day and someone asked if I was part of a school outing. Mission accomplished.

There's also the $15 Rockstar Eyes treatment, a.k.a. Guyliner. (There's a reason I saved this as an afterthought.) When I told a female friend about the possibility of this, her brows furrowed and said not all men can pull the look off.

She was right: It turned my already almond-shaped eyes into sunflower seeds. Which isn't to say it's not worth it for the right person, except for me--I didn't want to walk around looking like a depressed bat.

Halloween party!!!! info & details!!!!

Here we go again!!!

Long story short, we had so much fun at the Lady Bug and Purple Rain hoodie launch party that we just HAD to have another one! If there is one thing all of us here at the Landmark store in Chicago love as much as clothes, it’s partying! And since we love both, we got a super special edition hoodie that we are getting for the event! On top of that we will have music, treats, raffles, contests, and give aways!

Here is the info!

Who: Clandestine Industries

What: Clandestine Industries Halloween party!

When: Saturday October 25, 2008 from 12 PM to 3 PM

Where: 952 W. Newport Avenue in Chicago, IL 60657

Why: WHY NOT!

Oh, and P.S.

Cubs season is over so there will be PLENTY of street parking!

There’s more…

“So what’s the deal with this hoodie?”

The hoodie is an ultra limited edition hoodie with less than 100 being made! The store will have 60 available starting the day of the event (the online store will only get 30!). The cost will be $75 with a limit of 3 per customer since this is sure to be a collectors item.

The inspiration for the hoodie was mummies! This is one of our most decorated hoodies to date and we will be posting a photo soon before the event so you can all see how awesome it is in advance!

Advance hoodie reservations can be made at clandestineindustriesevents@gmail.com. Only 10 hoodies in each size will be available for reservation, leaving 20 hoodies available for day of purchase if all reservations are filled. Order confirmations will be sent in response (allow a couple days)

“Can I come even if I don’t want a mummy hoodie?”

For sure!!!!!!!

We are looking to have the best time possible with as many people that feel the same way!

“What else is happening there?”

We will be having a costume contest with 3 winners! All winners WILL receive a prize (Clandestine gear of course!) Winners will be awarded for the following:

- Best all around costume

- Best Rock Star costume (dress as Pete Wentz, Hayley from Paramore, Trav from G.C.H. etc.)

- Most creative

ALSO!!!

Brandon Roc will be in the Salon getting more creative than ever! For $10 you can get a new freaky hairstyle and color!!! (no cutting done, and temporary hair color used). The perfect time to unleash your inner Rock Star!

And lastly… (omg! There’s more?!?!?!)

Any person that spends over $50 day of the event (Hoodie automatically covers) will be entered into a raffle to win prizes like gift bundles and even a gift certificate to the store and a gift certificate to The Salon!

How can you say no to something this amazing! Hope to see you all there!

Update!!!

Hey Everyone!!!

So sooooooooooo much stuff is going to be happening and has happened and we just want to fill you in on everything.

First up:

Jess, the winner of Rock of Love season 1 with Bret Michaels just came in and got her hair done by Brandon. She came in and sat in the chair and left with an amazing platinum and purple do that is amazing! We have a pic up!

Also, the two new shirts and the hoodie dress are available both in the online store and the store in Chicago. Currently there are just mediums and larges. For all the guys wondering about the hoodie and it being a "dress", it is totally wearble for a guy. I (Patreek from the Landmark store) have rocked a medium the past few days when it was cold and I am 5'9, 165 lbs. It is longer so it bunches at the bottom a little bit but it isnt too bad.

Also, the Landmark store has some cool stuff happening right now. We have clandestine Industries Umbrellas, chap sticks, sweat bands, and even bubbles! they will be in our online store soon and are also gonna make great gifts this holiday season!

ALSO

the BatHeart box is overflowing now with all new shirts and wallets and cds...all for just $10 bucks!!! We decided to make a lot of stuff accesible for $10 so it is always worth it to try and come visit the store frequently because you never know what you will find in there!

This is gonna be a busy week for us but we hope to keep you all posted so you can have as much fun as us during it!!!

Love you all!

-your friends and lovers at Clandestine Industries!!!

It is you guys that make us love our jobs sooooooooo much and that keep us excited for what’s next! A special shout out to the Original Sixxx as well, since we really loves those kids.

A Rocket To The Moon just swung by to visit! Coolest/nicest guys ever!!!

So every once in a while we get visited by some of our favorite Crush/Decaydance artists that want to check out the store and pick up some new clothes while on tour. Today, Decaydance's new band A Rocket To The Moon stopped in and we were super impressed with how awesome they are both personally, and musicaly.

We'll always be pretty fond of A.R.T.T.M. because we have been fans of the band for about a year now. We discovered them last year online and are super stoked that they are now in the family. We have even added them to the playlist here at the store so when you come in we will totally dance with you while their music is bumpin'.

So yeah, we feel super lucky and were super happy to have them here. If you haven't checked them out or added them on F.O.E or Myspace be sure to do so. these guys are guarenteed to become one of your favorite bands if they aren't already!

“Lady Bug” and “Purple Rain” Hoodie Launch Party!

"Lady Bug" and "Purple Rain" Hoodie Launch Party!

Date: Friday  August 22nd (2008, duh) from 12pm-2pm

Location: 952 W. Newport Avenue @ the Chicago Landmark Store!!!

With school starting up again soon, and the last few weeks of the awesomeness of summer being upon us, the time has come to introduce two new hoodies to the Clandestine Industries collection. The two hoodies are the "Lady Bug" Hoodie and the "Purple Rain" hoodie as modeled by Pete and Tyga in our pics section!

Now those of us that work at the Retail store in Chicago get super excited every time something new comes in, and this case is no exception! We are so excited about the two new hoodies that we are going to be throwing a launch party in their honor next Friday! The coolest part about it is that you will be getting to rock them before anybody else has the chance to buy them online or in the store!

Here's how it's all going to work!

We will have a special party for Clandestine Industries fans from 12pm -2pm where complimentary Red & Purple snacks and drinks will be served, good music is played, and you will have the opportunity to buy one or both of the hoodies before anybody elsewhile partying with the Clandestine Industries team! On top of that, you will get 15% of the price of the hoodie! We will also have 4 featured items that have Red or Purple on them that if you purchase one of them along with one of the new hoodies, you get to take 15% off your entire sale (including every single thing in the store)

After 2pm the store will resume regular business hours and the hoodies will continue to stay at 15% off for anybody who comes in to the store to buy them next Friday ONLY! The 15% off your entire purchase with the purchase of a selected red or purple item will also last only until closing at the end of the day.

The items (until sold out) that will secure you 15% off your entire purchase are:

For RED:

The Big Heart Hoodie

The Red Word Search Hoodie

For PURPLE

The White 5 Seasons T-Shirt

The Wolf Bat Necklace

So here is the math done easy:

Purple Rain/Lady Bud Hoodie- 15% off all day

Purchase one of the above hoodies with a red OR purple selection and receive 15% off your entire order made up of anything else in the store! Until the end of the day

If you want to attend the launch party, all you need to do is RSVP to ClandestineIndustriesEvents@gmail.com with your Name, Size, and which hoodie/hoodies you wish to be guaranteed! Each RSVP'er can bring 1 person with them so if you have a group coming, make sure they all send in an RSVP! We will send you a confirmation email and we look forward to seeing you here and partying with us!!!

Hope to see you there!

The Clandestine Industries Team

The Map game only at the Landmark Store...how you can be a part!

So a little back info as to why we decided for our name to be ClanDestination 952 here on F.O.E.

The 952 stands for our Address which is 952 W. Newport in Chicago.

But the destination part...

Ever since we have opened we have been pretty stoked at how many out of towners we get in here as a destination for them on vacation. Granted we get city kids and heads from the burbs, but we also have some people that travel...and travel far.

We have had people from all over the country as well as the globe. We're talking Japan and Columbia...crazy, huh!

So today we decided to do a fun little game. Nothing crazy, just interesting. We printed out a map of the U.S.A. with all 50 states on it and we have a plan. We want to see if by October 1st (what we consider the end of summer in our heads) if we can have visitors/fans/customers from all 50 states! Certain ones we are kinda iffy on if we will get them but we already had a Hawaii today so there totally is hope to get this accomplished!

So if you are coming to Chicago, and coming to the store, don't be surprised if we ask you what hood you rep (where you are from).

At the end of the day we will upload the progress of our map so even if you can't get your state on it, you can see the progress.

We are SUPER EXCITED to be on F.O.E. Now!

Whattup Everyone!

Ok, so just a little 411 to get you all up to date on who we are, what we do, and why we already have a crush on you and your cousin even though we might not have met in person (yet).

We are the Clandestine Industries landmark location located in Chicago, Illinois. We are the ONLY store in the world dedicated to only Clandestine Industries products.

The store is located in the Wrigleyville section of Chicago which is the neighborhood where the cubs baseball stadium (Wrigley Field) is located.

The store itself is more of an experience than a retail location. Not only do we have a full service salon in the back, we also have a fridge always stocked with Crush soda that you can drink for free, and some of the raddest kids ever runnin the shop.

We will be updating this profile with updates on clothes and events to happen in the store (YES, Pete does stop by) and will also try to answer whatever questions you may have so that you can come visit us and hang out!

And we have crushes on everyone.

So come stop in, demand we take your picture and put it on F.O.E., and dance with us while chugging a grape crush! :)
